The Types of Carpet

Carpet is a very common type of flooring throughout the world. It consists of a pile material attached to a backing. Historically, in Europe, carpets were not used on the floor until sometime in the eighteenth century when Europeans had extended contact with Eastern cultures. Most people have a different distinction between a carpet and a rug. Some argue that a rug is different from a carpet in that a rug is made of a lower quality. Some argue that a carpet differs because a rug has a defined edge whereas a carpet goes from wall to wall. A similar definition says that a rug is simply laid on the floor and a carpet is affixed to the floor. The strict definition beyond a pile attached to a backing is not terribly important. What is important is the different constructions and the benefits of each one.

Woven Carpets

This type of carpet is produced in a way very similar to woven fabrics. The pile is made by weaving fibres together. It can be woven in a plush style or a Berber style. The Berber style consists of the fibres of the pile being looped. The plush style consists of pile that is cut. Oftentimes carpets that have images, shapes, or designs on them are often woven. The images on the carpet are made by weaving multiple coloured fabrics together. These are typically the most expensive types of carpets. They are so expensive due to the labour intensive process of very carefully weaving the fabrics together. They are very slow to create and require a lot of work.

Types of Carpet

Needle

These types of carpet are much more modern and technologically advanced than the classic styles of woven carpets. Needle felt carpets are made by blending synthetic fibres together. This process of felting creates a very durable flooring material. Oftentimes, these carpets are used in restaurants, hotels, and other commercial settings that have very high foot traffic.

Knotted Pile

These carpets are made by alternating structural threads with supplementary threads at right angles to the surface. These threads are then knotted to form the pile. This is the process used to make shag carpet. Typically, these carpets are knotted by machines, but some of the more expensive varieties are still knotted by hand. Oriental rugs and Kashmir rugs are still knotted by hand.

Tufted Pile

These carpets differ from other kinds because the pile is actually injected into whatever is being used for the backing. The backing is then affixed to another backing made from some kind of material which provides support. This is always done using machines. Because of the durability and the ease of manufacture, this is the most popular form of carpeting for domestic floor covering purposes. It is very durable and very easy to create or replace.

Suppliers such as Brintons and others often deal in many of these varied kinds of carpets. Each type of carpet has advantages and disadvantages. Deciding which one is right for you is merely a matter of weighing your needs and your budget.
